BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR BUSINESS

In the late 1970’s Lorenzo decided to turn his building business into a building supplies store. This was mainly due to the two major hardware suppliers Vic Lee and Cowell Building Supplies closing down, which made the people of Port Augusta go to Lorenzo to buy building products.

Mitre 10 approached Lorenzo to join them in 1978 after the former Mitre 10 store owned by Cowell Building Supplies Closed.

In 1981 Lorenzo opened a store in Port Pirie, and in February 1982 a fire destroyed Better Homes Supplies and Port Augusta Concrete Products.

Within days Lorenzo made a big decision to re-build Better Homes Supplies, which he relocated adjacent to the old existing building, and after a lot of hard work Better Homes Supplies was officially re-opened for business on the 16th November 1982.

In April 1991 Lorenzo decided to re-build on the old Better Homes Supplies site and opened a Garden, Outdoor & Leisure Centre in this building.

Lorenzo has great faith in the future growth of Port Augusta and in 2005 decided to expand Better Homes Supplies even further with a new two-storey extension at the rear of the Hardware building, to provide customers with a wider range of products on display for new home purchasers and renovators. Including the new range of made to measure kitchens.

Late 2009 Harding & Manning which was renting the premises in front of Better Homes Garden Centre went out of business through voluntary liquidation. In early 2010 Lorenzo was asked to re-rent that part of the building, but instead he saw the opportunity to re-develop the Garden-Outdoor-Leisure Centre further. This has now been completed and every supplier and representative openly comment about this being the best offer of products in the state.

Better Homes Supplies is now a large and successful business that offers more than most Adelaide stores for the people of Port Augusta and the surrounding district, and employs over 40 staff, some of which have been with the company for over 25 years.

Better Homes Supplies has evolved with the mining, tourist and farming industries in Northern and Western South Australia. Our extensive stock holding and affiliation with thousands of suppliers across Australia has enabled Better Homes Supplies to become the preferred supplier for many businesses connected with these industries.
